Curator: Joel Pickford
Soul Calling: A Photographic Journey through the Hmong Diaspora was conceived by photographer, author, and documentarian Joel Pickford, highlighted the stories of the Hmong community in Laos, their journeys to the United States and the San Joaquin Valley, and their integration into American culture and society.
Six years in the making, this was the first comprehensive exhibition on the Hmong Diaspora. The exhibition of photographs, as companion to the textiles of Houa Vang, was an amazing ethnographic study. FAM is proud to have been the first to host this exhibition.

This exhibition of storycloths, decorative clothing, and Paj ntaub or “flower cloths” enhanced the “Soul Calling” photography exhibition by telling more of the story of the Hmong. Houa Vang is a most remarkable and skilled textile artist who has created complex and masterfully embroidered examples of the art form. Her candid story cloths have helped redefine the evolution of this folk art by creating incredibly detailed pictorial stories about the Hmong people and their exodus from their homeland to the United States.
Soul Calling and Threads of Life were funded through grants from the James Irvine Foundation, California Council for the Humanities, the Bonner Family Foundation, and Fresno County Office of Education.
September 28, 2012 to January 6, 2013
The Council of 100’s Distinguished Woman Artist of 2012. Arline Fisch’s exhibition was an amazing display of wearable art. Ms. Fisch’s work is a collection of woven, knitted, formed, and pleated metal that is like fine sculpture that can be worn as jewelry or other types of body adornments.
September 28, 2012 to January 6, 2013

This collection is a departure from Ansel Adams' usual work. As one of America's premier photographers, he is best known for his stunning landscape photographs of the western US, many of which were taken in nearby Yosemite. This famous collection of Adams' photographs tells a larger story by what you do not see in the photographs, commissioned by the U.S. government to record the Japanese internment at Manzanar during WWII.
This exhibition created in cooperation with the Fresno County Public Libraries and their Big Read program focused on the book, Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston.
