Contemporary Contemporaneo

Contemporary ~ Contemporaneo
A Bi-national Artist Experience

The Fresno Art Museum in partnership with the Mexican Consulate of Fresno has teamed up to launch Contemporary – Contemporáneo, an interaction of Mexican and American artists. The project is the first of its kind where a local museum teams up with a Mexican Consulate to address contemporary issues and build cultural bridges through a bi-national artist- in-residence program.

An artist from Oaxaca, Mexico who demonstrate a promising career is selected and paired with one counterpart from the Central Valley to participate in the program. For five weeks, the two artists interact and exchange artistic ideas while developing a better understanding of each others country. Through art, they convey their thoughts and relationship to the world that surrounds them. At the end of the residence, exhibit representing the work created during the residence is displayed.  Through this exhibit, visitors are drawn into the artistic mind and transcend into their interpretations on how art can be used to unite people and countries.

2007 Contemporary~Contemporáneo Artists
Walfred Aguilar Rodriguez – Oaxaca, Mexico
Nigel Robertson – Fresno, California

The project is meant to open dialogue among people and helps provide a connection among diverse groups of people who reside in the same community. This year, the project selected an artist from Oaxaca, Mexico as there are over 65,000 Oaxaqueños living in the Central Valley. We believe this project is exciting and innovative as it builds connection among people, communities, institutions and businesses that otherwise would not be conceivable. Through this project, FAM and the Mexican Consulate of Fresno act as the hub of the network that brings the resources together to create thought provoking discussions for you to enjoy.
